University of Nottingham

Overview

The University of Nottingham, described by The Sunday Times University Guide 2011 as ‘the embodiment of the modern international university’, has award-winning campuses in the UK, China and Malaysia. The University of Nottingham was originally established as a college of the University of London in 1881 before being granted its Royal Charter in 1948. It is now one of the UK’s largest universities.

In the latest global tables, The University of Nottingham was again confirmed as a world-class university:

  • 9th in the UK by the established world rankings index published by Shanghai Jiao Tong University in 2012;
  • In the top 1% of all universities worldwide in the QS World University Rankings, with a ranking of 72nd in the world an 17-place rise from two years before on the Times Higher-QS Rankings.

In 2011 it climbed rankings published in the Complete University Guide, the Guardian University Guide, and The Times Good University Guide. In RAE, the UK's definitive guide to research quality and excellence, The University of Nottingham was ranked 7th in UK for research power and 90% of research at international standard.

The University of Nottingham is home to more than 9,000 international students from more than 150 nations.

The University of Nottingham is proud of their award-winning campuses, both at home and abroad, and it continually invests in its grounds, buildings and facilities. University Park is The University of Nottingham’s largest campus at 300 acres. Part of the University since 1929, the campus is widely regarded as one of the largest and most attractive in the country. Set in extensive greenery and around a lake, University Park is the focus of life for students, staff and visitors. Conveniently located only two miles from the city centre.

The Jubilee Campus is a modern purpose-built campus which now extends to 65 acres and is located only one mile from University Park. The initial phase was opened by Her Majesty the Queen in 1999. The Sutton Bonington Campus is 10 miles south of University Park on the border of Nottinghamshire and Leicestershire. Its countryside location makes an ideal home for the School of Biosciences and the University's new School of Veterinary Medicine and Science. The Medical School opened in 1970 as part of the QMC (Queen's Medical Centre) and was the first to be established in the UK in the 20th century. Major investments have been made to provide modern, high quality facilities.

The University's strong links with China resulted in an invitation to become the first foreign university to establish an independent campus, under new legislation passed in China in 2003. The campus is located in Ningbo, a historic city on China's eastern coast close to Shanghai, and has been developed in partnership with the dynamic and innovative Wanli Education Group.

The University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus opened in September 2000 to become the first campus of a British University in Malaysia and one of the first anywhere in the world - earning the distinction of the Queen's Award for Enterprise 2001 and the Queen's Award for Industry (International Trade) 2006.
