Student life

Nottingham has a long history shrouded in drama, mystery and myth. From the world-famous outlaw, Robin Hood, to three literary giants, Lord Byron, DH Lawrence and Alan Silitoe, the city's heritage is literally made of legends. Visitors and city residents will find there is huge amount to do and see in and around Nottingham: history, culture, country parks, sport, shopping and dining, local events, nights out.

The University of Nottingham Students' Union is the hub of student social life. In addition to the many events and activities they organise for students - including societies, sports clubs, and student-run services - they provide a number of opportunities for students to socialise both on and off campus. These include bars, club nights and comedy nights. They even run their own cinema and theatre group, The Nottingham New Theatre.

The University of Nottingham currently has nearly 200 societies for students to get involved in covering a broad range of subjects and interests. The Athletic Union currently runs 76 sports clubs for students to participate in, whatever their interest or ability. These include sports as diverse as badminton, dodge ball, cheerleading, caving, snow sports, Ultimate Frisbee, martial arts, water sports, men and women's football, rugby and hockey, croquet, cycling and much more. They also hold a number of events throughout the year.

The Student Volunteer Centre helps students find volunteering opportunities within the local community, the Students’ Union itself and overseas. With over 100 projects to choose from, students can always find something that matches their interests, course or career aspirations.

Campus facilities include:

  • Lakeside Arts Centre on main campus,
  • Wide range of outstanding conference facilities across three campuses,
  • Extensive range of sport and fitness facilities, including a Sports Centre,
  • Fitness Centre and swimming pool,
  • 13 libraries across its UK and international campuses,

Accommodation

The University has a wide range of quality accommodation available, located both on campuses and in surrounding areas. Appoximately 8,000 rooms are available on or close to campuses. Students commencing their first year of study are guaranteed a place in one of these sites subject to meeting certain criteria such as firmly accept an offer and apply for accommodation by a specific date. International students are guaranteed university accommodation for the full duration of their studies.

University-arranged accommodation is either owned by the University or offered by one of the providers the University works closely with. Accommodation is situated on or close to campus and within easy travelling distance of the city. Safe and comfortable, all accommodation has dedicated management teams on site who are there to help whenever is needed.

There are different types of accommodation available such as catered halls, self-catered and part-catered accommodation. Self-catered halls offer the independence of cooking for onerself and longer contracts that allow one to stay in the room over vacation periods. Catered halls include the cost of food in the fees and require students to move out at the end of each term, unless they booked to stay or store belongings during the vacation periods (additional charges apply).

Postgraduate accommodation is self-catered and there is a choice of different room types to suit needs and budget, from shared flats to large en suite studios. All accommodation comes complete with kitchen/diner facilities, and every room is fully furnished with either direct access to the University’s network or broadband internet.
