MODULES
Functions of Cells and Tissues: This module aims to introduce you to the basic concepts of anatomy, histology and physiology as an integrated experience of theory and laboratory observation. It provides a foundation to teaching that you encounter when you begin your studies at degree level. Topics covered include cellular anatomy, cellular function and how cells form tissues, the physiological function of tissues and the form and function of tissues.
Basic Microbiology for Biomedical Science: This module introduces you to aspects of fundamental microbiology required for the study of Biomedical Science and Medical Sciences at undergraduate level. You will learn the range, characteristics and properties of micro-organisms. These features are used to begin to discuss the importance of micro-organisms to man, particularly in relation to infection, disease and the control of micro-organisms.
Introductory Biochemistry: The aims of this module are to provide the fundamental aspects of introductory biochemistry necessary for an understanding of the specialised subjects when studying Medical or Biomedical Science programmes and underpins the biochemistry required by a range of courses offered by DMU. Basic biochemical processes and concepts relevant to disease and human health are explored.
Molecular Sciences: This unit is designed to introduce you to basic chemical theories which underpin biological activity; the energy and thermodynamics of chemical systems; functional groups, molecules and chemical relationships. You will also gain an understanding of complex compounds and ions. The relevance and application of these chemical principles to the life science disciplines are outlined and discussed.
