Providing a solid foundation in the principles of chemistry and biochemistry.
FUNCTIONS OF CELLS AND TISSUES
This module aims to introduce you to the basic concepts of anatomy, histology and physiology as an integrated experience of theory and laboratory observation. It provides a foundation to histopathology/physiology teaching that you encounter when you begin your studies at degree level. Topics covered include cellular anatomy, cellular function and how cells form tissues, the physiological function of tissues and the form and function of tissues.
CHEMISTRY 1
The aims of this module are to introduce post-secondary school topics in chemistry and to build the subject knowledge and practical skills required for further study. You will begin to develop your understanding of basic theoretical principles and associate these with appropriate laboratory practice. Specifically: formulae, atomic structure, redox, thermodynamics and bonding are covered in this module.
INTRODUCTORY BIOCHEMISTRY
The aims of this module are to provide the fundamental aspects of introductory biochemistry necessary for an understanding of the specialised subjects dealt with when studying medical or biomedical science programmes at bachelor's level. You will also gain an understanding of biochemistry principles underpinning a range of courses offered within the university. Basic biochemical processes and concepts relevant to disease and human health are explored.
CHEMISTRY 2
The aims of this module are to introduce further topics in chemistry and to build on the subject knowledge and practical skills acquired and developed in Chemistry 1. You will further develop your understanding of basic theoretical principles and associated laboratory practice. Specifically: equilibria, acid-base equilibria, kinetics and organic chemistry are covered in this module.
Leicester is at the heart of England with excellent transport links. It is just off the M1 and close to the main A1, with easy access to the north and south. The M69 and M6 are also close by and offer access to Birmingham, Wales and the south west. Leicester is just over an hour away from London St Pancras, and the Eurostar hub, meaning Paris is only four hours away by train. East Midlands Airport is 30 minutes away with regular flights to destinations across Europe.
