University of Notre Dame

Student life

Our students create clubs and organizations for every interest. They write for The Observer, our student newspaper. They develop their ideas through the Entrepreneurship Society. They motivate at-risk children to pursue their dreams through College Mentors for Kids.

With more than 400 student clubs and organizations to choose from, you'll find a number of ways to get involved. With over 900 arts events annually and numerous programs and departments, the Notre Dame campus offers an opulent variety of opportunities for students to share their expression.

Even if you're not a varsity athlete, Notre Dame provides countless opportunities to engage in athletics, including:

  • Inter-hall sporting events (we're the only non-academy school to offer full-tackle, full-pad tackle football)
  • Extensive recreational facilities, including Rolfs Sports Recreation Center and Rockne Memorial
  • An intramural program that Sports Illustrated deemed one of the best in the country
  • Bookstore Basketball, the world's largest five-on-five tournament featuring more than 700 teams each year

Accommodation

100% of first-year students and 80% of sophomores, juniors, and seniors live in the 30 residence halls on campus. There are no social fraternities or sororities at Notre Dame - the residence hall is the focus of social, religious, and intramural athletic activities.

Walk down a hallway of any of our 30 residence halls and you’ll encounter a true cross-section of our student body: varsity athletes heading to practice, sophomore music majors discussing the merits of cool jazz vs. big band, Californian freshmen testing out their first winter coats.

At Notre Dame, our residence halls are microcosms by design. Every entering first-year student receives a randomly assigned roommate, and every single-sex hall brings together students from every year of study. You could be a Zahmbie (Zahm House), a Knight (Keenan Hall), or a Shamrock (McGlinn Hall), to name a few. Each hall has its own mascot, nickname, color scheme, favorite charity, and signature event.

Career services

The Career Center provides undergraduate students with career counseling and career development services, self-assessments, workshops, presentations for academic departments, career fairs, and mock interviews, in addition to other services.

We encourage students to take ownership of their career direction, and be willing to devote the time and energy necessary to conduct a successful search for jobs, internships, fellowships, and/or the identification of graduate school programs. Students have the opportunity to utilize our online databases, including Go IRISH, to pursue postgraduate opportunities, sign up for interviews, and conduct career-related research.
