University of Bonn

Overview

The University of Bonn was founded almost 200 years ago and is considered to be one of Germany's and indeed Europe's most important institutes of higher education. As home of learning to over 32,500 students, University of Bonn enjoys an outstanding reputation both at home and abroad.

The University of Bonn is one of the world's leading research based Universities and therefore it is no surprise that it operates on an international level. The University particularly specializes in the fields of research and teaching and this has led to our evolving into the position of a truly prominent international institution.

The international orientation of research and teaching has a long tradition in Bonn. The proportion of foreign stu- dents has, for years, been significantly higher than the national average in Germany. A solid education based on research-linked degree courses provides our graduates with clear advantages in the labour market - advantages that correlate with the high academic reputation of our teaching staff.

The University of Bonn offers specially designed courses that are particularly oriented to international students. The courses lead to an international degree (Bachelor's, Master's or PhD degree). They are partially or fully taught in English and offer special counselling and support for international students.

The University of Bonn was founded on 18th October 1818 by the Prussian king Friedrich Wilhelm. It is for this reason that our University was subsequently named after the king - the official title is actually The Rhenish Friedrich Wilhelm University of Bonn.

In our almost 200 years, the University has experienced many great moments but has also endured some difficult times. Nowadays, we are regarded as one of the leading German and indeed international higher education institutions.

Among its notable alumni and faculty are: Pope Benedict XVI, Karl Marx, Joseph Goebbels, Heinrich Heine, Heinrich Hertz, Friedrich Hirzebruch, Friedrich Nietzsche, Friedrich August Kekulé von Stradonitz, Joseph Schumpeter, Konrad Adenauer, Max Ernst, Constantin Carathéodory, Karl Weierstrass, Karl Barth, Wolfgang Kaleck, Johannes Sobotta, Margaret Altmann and Samson Raphael Hirsch.
