VU is one of the two big research universities in Amsterdam. It was founded in 1880 and is consistently listed among the world’s top universities*. While the Netherlands does not have an official ranking system, according to the "CWTS Leiden Ranking", the Vrije Universiteit was recognized as the second best university, nationally.

VU University Amsterdam is one of 14 research universities in the Netherlands that offer an academic education and Master’s degree programmes. The faculties offer 50 bachelor's, almost 160 master's, and a number of PhD programmes. The language of instruction for most bachelor's courses is Dutch. As of fall 2016, the university offers seven bachelor's programmes fully in English. About 80 master's programmes at VU are offered entirely in English.
