The University of Vermont (UVM) is a public research university in the city of Burlington, to the northwest of the state. Founded in 1791, UVM is among the oldest universities in the United States and is the fifth institution of higher education established in the New England region of the northeastern U.S.
The University of Vermont is one of the eight original Public Ivies – publicly funded universities considered to be providing a quality of education comparable to the Ivy League.
There are ten academic colleges at UVM offering a wide range of studies in liberal arts, life scenes, engineering, and pre-professional degrees. The largest medical complex in Vermont, the UVM Medical Centre, has a main facility on campus affiliated with the College of Medicine. The UVM Department of Theatre was ranked the eighth in the ‘Top BA Theatre Programs in the Country’ by OnStage website and Tyler Theatre hosts four full productions a season. The Vermont Mozart Festival began at UVM in 1976 and still performs on campus and in south Burlington. The UVM’s Fleming Museum of Art contains over 25,000 anthropological artefacts.

In the 2017 edition of the Best Colleges - National Universities University of Vermont is ranked the 92nd. In 2016 Forbes "America's Top Colleges" list ranks UVM the 138th overall out of 660 private and public colleges and universities in America, and also ranks it the 28th in the "Public Colleges" category and the 64th among "Research Universities."
Among UVM distinguished alumni are Jody Williams, a Nobel Peace Prize-winning activist for her campaign against land mines; Henry Jarvis Raymond, the founder of the New York Times ,Martin St. Louis, a hockey player and many others.
