University of Massachusetts at Lowell is a public institution. Founded as a state college in 1894, it gained university status in 1959 and joined the state system in 1991. A comprehensive university, it has special expertise in applied science and technology and is deeply committed to educating students for lifelong success and conducting research and outreach activities that bring value to the region. 

The second largest of the UMass campuses, Lowell currently offers its 13,000 undergraduate and graduate students 90 different degree programs in its six schools and colleges:
