The University of Liverpool is one of the oldest civic universities in the UK. Founded in 1881, the university has a reputation for recruiting notable scholars and is associated with eight Nobel Laureates.
It is a pioneering university, being the first in the world to establish a School of Tropical Medicine in 1899. The first departments of Architecture, Biochemistry and Civic Design in the UK were opened here. The University is well known for excellent teaching and research that relates to the professions, with particular strengths in Medicine, Dentistry, Law, Engineering, Business and Architecture. Recognised for innovative teaching methods the University is also the largest provider of online degrees in Europe.
Many of University staff are at the forefront of research. In the most recent Research Assessment Exercise (RAE), 53% of research staff ranked in the highest categories of 4* (world-leading) and 3* (internationally excellent). The University is a member of The Russell Group of 24 UK research- led universities and is ranked in the top 1% of higher education institutions worldwide for internationally recognised research. 4,600 international students from more than 100 countries enrol at the university and study on campus.

In 2011 the University launched a £650m 10 year campus investment programme in learning and research facilities and state-of-the-art residential buildings as part of the University’s commitment to providing a world-class student experience and research environment. The investment includes a £250 million redevelopment of the University’s student accommodation. A further £350 million is earmarked for investment in the academic estate at its city centre campus and at its Leahurst Veterinary campus on the Wirral.

Liverpool John Lennon Airport is around eight miles from the city centre and offers flights from various parts of Europe. A low-cost bus service from the airport to the city centre is operated by Merseytravel. Manchester Airport, which is around 45 minutes from Liverpool, is the destination for flights from around the world. There is a direct rail link and coach service from the airport to Liverpool City Centre.
