A variety of scholarships are available for students who wish to study in Japan. Although many of them are provided by external entities, there are some scholarships awarded directly by the University of Tokyo. Some scholarships should be applied to prior to arrival in Japan while others can be applied to after arriving in Japan.
The University of Tokyo Special Scholarship for International Students was established in 2004. It aims at "providing a research grant to high-achieving, postgraduate international students who are privately-funded to assist their academic pursuits at the University and at promoting a greater acceptance of excellent students from overseas."
Recipients will receive a monthly research grant of ¥200,000/¥150,000 during the standard period of their program (up to one year for research students).
The University of Tokyo (Hongo Campus) is located at Bunkyo-ku in Tokyo. The stations near the university are Ueno and Okachimachi on the JR Yamanote line, Ochanomizu on the JR Chuo line, and Keisei-Ueno on the Keisei line. When you come from these stations, it is convenient to take a taxi. The nearest subway stations are Hongo-san-chome on the Marunouchi line and the Oedo line, Nezu and Yushima on the Chiyoda line, and Todai-mae on the Nanboku line. You can walk to the university from these subway stations.
