Entry requirements

To be eligible for entry to an undergraduate degree you must fulfill all of the following requirements:

  • Complete the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) or an equivalent Australian or overseas qualification
  • Complete and achieve the required grades in each of the prerequisite subjects for the course and any prerequisite tests, interviews or auditions
  • Meet the English language requirements


Guaranteed entry scores for the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) and Australian or overseas qualifications equivalent to VCE depend on the subject. As a guide, a minimum average of 70% or equivalent*, is required for entry based on study completed at university level. The levels of performance required may be higher and may vary by course. Entry is not guaranteed.


You need to meet the University's TOEFL (academic test) requirements within the 24 months preceding application. The following scores are required:

  • Paper based test - a score of 577 or more including a score of 4.5 in the Test of Written English.
  • Internet based test - a score of 79 and scores of: Writing: 21, Speaking: 18, Reading: 13, Listening 13.


You need to meet the University's IELTS (academic test) requirements within the 24 months preceding application. The following scores are required: an overall band score of 6.5 or more in the Academic International English Language Testing System (IELTS), with no bands less than 6.0.

How to apply

Studying Year 12 in Australia

You should apply through the Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre (VTAC). Full details about the VTAC application process can be found at the VTAC website or by purchasing the VTAC Guide from a newsagent. Through VTAC, you can list up to 12 course preferences. You should list courses in your order of preference with the course of greatest interest listed first. Be sure that your application is finalised by the VTAC due dates.


Current University of Melbourne international students

If you're an international student currently studying at the University of Melbourne and you wish to transfer to another University of Melbourne course, you must submit your transfer application via the Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre (VTAC). Be sure that your application is finalised by the VTAC due dates.


All other international students

The Parkville Campus of the University is in a city central location and has many public transport hubs within a 5 minute walk from campus. Most other campuses are available to get to via public transport.
