ETH Zurich is one of the leading international universities for technology and the natural sciences. Established in 1855 as the Federal Polytechnical School, ETH Zurich has, from the outset, been a national centre for education with international appeal, attracting talent from all over the world. ETH Zurich was given its present name, Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule), in 1911. The university grew steadily and in 1961 it embarked on the first stage of constructing its second site on the Hönggerberg, on the outskirts of Zurich.
The Nobel Prize honours outstanding achievements in the fields of physics, chemistry, medicine, literature and peace. Twenty-one Nobel Laureates have studied, taught or conducted research at ETH Zurich, underlining the excellent reputation of the university. Among others, some famous Nobel Prize laureates at ETH Zurich are: Albert Einstein, Leopold Ruzicka, Wolfgang Pauli, Vladimir Prelog, Richard Ernst and Kurt Wüthrich.
ETH Zurich regularly features in international rankings as one of the best universities in the world and the leading university in continental Europe. When the rankings are differentiated by specialist area, ETH Zurich is in the first twelve for Science and Engineering in the THE and QS listings.
