Carnegie Mellon University

Student life

Carnegie Mellon students work hard in the classroom, but they're also active outside the classroom. Whether it's competing in the next game, volunteering in the community or acting on stage, our students know how to balance their interests. With over 43 clubs and intramural sports, all students have the opportunity to compete on the field, in the pool and on the court. With over 280 student-run campus organizations, there are many opportunities to get involved in creating your college experience. Our organizations represent various social, service, media, academic, spiritual, recreational, sport, religious, political, cultural and governance opportunities for all students. School spirit and traditions at Carnegie Mellon include a lot of plaid, bagpipes, buggy races and a Spring Carnival that's the social event of the year.

Accommodation

Carnegie Mellon University offers a wide variety of housing options, including traditional residence halls, apartments, suites-style living, and full houses. Some buildings are designated exclusively for first-year students, some are primarily upper-class, and others are a mix of first-year and upper-class students.

University housing is available on-campus and in our Oakland community. All on-campus residential areas are located in close proximity to academic buildings. The Oakland community apartments are located within a 5–10 minute walk to campus.

Location

You can always find something new in the city of Pittsburgh. Between the 88 neighborhoods and districts and the 10 colleges with 86,000 students in the area – there’s so much to explore and so many different types of people to meet along with things to do in Pittsburgh.

Oakland, Shadyside and Squirrel Hill are the closest neighborhoods to campus and easy to explore by foot. But if you’re looking to go beyond the nearby vicinity and have mapped out a plan to see more than the obvious, your Carnegie Mellon student ID will double as your bus pass throughout Allegheny County – including the Pittsburgh International Airport.
