The Professional Graduate Diploma in Education (secondary) ensures that students enter teaching with professional skills; attitudes and competences to focus their subject expertise on teaching and learning in the modern secondary school; the course recruits graduates from a full range of secondary teaching disciplines and is attended by UK; EU and international students; the course is recognised as a valid teaching qualification throughout the world; secondary school teachers are able to qualify to teach one or two subject areas of the secondary curriculum; all subject areas in the Scottish secondary curriculum are available;. PGDE (Secondary) is designed to meet the benchmarks for initial teacher education; the course encourages active and participatory styles of learning in order to meet students' professional needs, and to promote a commitment to continuing professional development; aim of the PGDE is to support the development of student teachers in attaining the Standard for Initial Teacher Education for the secondary sector within the context of a partnership model of teacher education; this will be achieved by; anticipating, identifying and responding to the needs of learners at all stages; working with schools and local authorities to develop the partnership so that the roles and responsibilities of each of the partners reflect the particular contributions that each can make and are integrated to provide a coherent and progressive experience for students; enabling student teachers to develop skills in collaboration and co-operative working with colleagues within education and as members of multi disciplinary and inter disciplinary teams; supporting the development of a commitment to continuing professional development beyond the initial phase and of a positive attitude to life long learning; the specific objectives for PGDE(S) include the following; developing student competence in both subject-specific and generic areas; including transferable and key skills; developing student competence in the classroom to ensure the highest quality of teaching and learning for all pupils; encouraging the practice of self-evaluation and target setting during initial training and beyond; enhancing interpersonal/interprofessional skills; fostering an awareness of national priorities in education and an appreciation of the role of the teacher in fulfilling them; ensuring that students promote the personal and social development of their pupils;
