This 36-week course is developed in response to the needs of employers and the changing nature of community education and is written in units of competence; competence embraces both specific task skills and the knowledge, attitudes and understanding required by community educators; candidates must have substantial experience in 1 or more aspects of community-based activity; this experience is accredited prior to the course and assessed in respect of the competencies which the candidate has already mastered; the remaining competencies then form part of each student’s study plan: Accredited prior learning and core modules; (placement) faculty-based study is supported by a 12-week fieldwork placement from early March until the end of May; the placement is arranged to enhance the student’s practical skills and may take place in varied settings according to the student’s needs; some placements can take place abroad through the Socrates/Erasmus scheme.
