Year 1: Is a qualifying year, which means that students must pass it, but the results do not count towards their final degree; students gain familiarity with the practices of working at degree level, and gain understanding of the different ways in which historical material can be used; students are introduced to language and modern literature in core English modules and may be able to choose a module introducing either medieval studies or drama. Year 2: Part 1 of the degree is weighted at 40% of the final assessment; students demonstrate a greater assurance of working at degree level and in direct aspects of their study with some measure of independence; reflecting on and developing their year 1 studies in English, students take a core module in literary theory, and then, based on the options students have previously taken, choose further modules in English language, modern literary culture, medieval studies and/or performance analysis. Year 3: Part 2 of the degree is weighted at 60% of the overall assessment; at the end of year 3, students are expected to demonstrate an efficient use of scholarly apparatus, to take initiative in their work and have some independence of judgement; in English, students choose from a wide range of modules, specialising in key areas of the subject; students have the same range of final year options in English as single Honours students.
