This wide-ranging and varied course thus combines the study of English literature and the visual arts in Europe and North America; students are normally expected to devote 1/2 their time to each discipline; art history requires visual awareness and understanding, which enhances the literary and historical focus of English studies and vice versa; in the 1st year, students are obliged to take core modules in both departments, while in the 2nd year students choose from a range of optional modules; in the 3rd year, students have the option to complete a dissertation in art history.
