This programme of study offers students an exciting opportunity to study towards becoming an autonomous practitioner in their own area of clinical practice; the modules have been mapped and designed against the Royal College of Nursing and Nursing and Midwifery Council domains and competencies for nurse practitioners (2005, 2006); this ensures that students are fully prepared to deliver high quality services at an autonomous level, enabling practitioners to admit patients with undifferentiated diagnosis to the health care system, diagnose, initiate and manage treatment and arranging referral as appropriate as an autonomous practitioner; requirements to undertake this programme of study and practice at autonomous level, are normally diploma level study in a related subject; the student must also be working within a clinical environment that exposes them to situations to support their learning; the amount of clinical time required will be negotiated on an individual basis; prior to starting this programme of study, students must identify and obtain practice support from suitably qualified health practitioners who are prepared to assist students in the development of physical assessment, examination and history taking skills in the clinical arena.
