Modules

1st year

Starting from your 1st year, you will work in teams with students from other engineering domains, such as mechanical engineering and industrial design. You will work on real projects, which will give you the practical skills you will need in your future profession.

In your 1st semester, you will gain basic knowledge related to electrical and electronic engineering. Subjects include:

  • Network basics
  • Programming C
  • Math
  • Logic circuits
  • Introduction to electronics
  • Microcontrollers
  • Professional skills

In your 2nd semester, you will delve deeper into your specialization of choice:

  • Industrial and Power Systems:  In this specialization, you will learn about topics such as power electronics, control systems engineering, electric drives and sustainable electric energy supplies. Together with a group, you will work on a sustainable energy project. The group will develop a prototype of an electrical power system. You will increase your electrical engineering knowledge by studying topics such as electrical machinery and basic electronics.
  • Embedded Systems: The focus of Embedded Systems is digital technology and microcontrollers. Together with your project group, you will develop an embedded system that uses sensors to communicate with the internet and its environment. You will learn the basics of object-oriented programming and deepen your knowledge of electronics.

Embedded Systems

  • Digital system design
  • Control systems
  • Object oriented programming
  • Interfacing
  • Operating systems
  • Data communication
  • Digital signal processing Databases
  • Internet of things
  • Work placement (1 semester)
  • Minor (1 semester)
  • Graduation project (1 semester)

Minor

In the first half of the 4th year you will take a minor for 6 months. During the minor you either specialize further in your field or broaden your knowledge. You can take one of the HAN minors, such as Embedded Vision Design or the Power Minor. Or you can study for 6 months at another institution in the Netherlands or a partner university abroad.

Graduation assignment

Your final step as a Bachelors student is the graduation assignment, which takes place in the second half of the 4th year. This assignment is usually done at a company, where you help tackle an issue that the company is facing. You will be guided throughout by a company coach and HAN lecturer.

Location

HAN University of Applied Sciences has two campuses, located in Arnhem and Nijmegen.

Nijmegen is situated on the banks of the river Waal, in the east of The Netherlands, near to the German border, and is the oldest city in Holland - recently celebrating its 2,000th anniversary.

Arnhem, the capital of the province of Gelderland, is only 15km from Nijmegen and lies partially in the hills at the edge of National Park De Veluwe, a striking area of woods and heath. Arnhem is a ‘green’ city, where people take pleasure in living, working and recreation.
