The Law LLB at DMU, recognised by the Solicitors Regulation Authority and the Bar Standards Board, combines academic rigour with projects that put your legal training into practice to develop the skills employers look for.
Reasons to study Law at De Montfort University:
In the first year you study four core modules to give you a strong foundation in law. In years two and three you are free to select the modules that reflect your own interests and career aims, although certain modules are compulsory if you want to achieve qualifying status.
Successful completion of the course guarantees you a place on our Legal Practice Course (subject to conditions), which is the next stage of training to become a solicitor. You also have the opportunity to gain a competitive edge in the graduate job market by completing the optional paid placement year with employers such as Bosch, the NHS, GE Healthcare and the Audit Commission.
We offer a range of pro-bono activities (voluntary legal work) such as Law Clinic and Street Law (activities include giving law talks in schools and raising money for charity) which develop the skills and experience that employers are looking for. We also encourage you to take a mini-pupillage (a work placement usually for one week in a set of chambers) and other short-form work placements.
An optional paid placement year offers invaluable professional experience and there are a lot of opportunities as we advertise over 1,000 vacancies for placements each year on the student portal.
Our dedicated placement team based in the faculty can help you find your ideal placement role. You will gain ongoing application and CV support, interview and aptitude test training and on-going support while undertaking your placement year.
The average salary for placements is around £14,000, outside London.
