University of Utah

Overview

The University of Utah is one of the best in the nation at creating startup companies based on student and faculty research. This is indicative of the innovative and industrious thinking found across campus and in classrooms.

The University of Utah, located in Salt Lake City among the foothills of the Wasatch Range, is the flagship institution of higher learning in Utah. Founded in 1850, it serves over 31,000 students from across the U.S. and the world. With 17 colleges and schools, nearly 100 departments, more than 72 undergraduate majors, 90 graduate majors, and 500 student organizations, the University of Utah prepares students to live and compete in the global workplace.

Forbes magazine’s recent ranking of the “Best States for Business” pointed to “an educated labor force” as a big reason Utah came in at No. 1. The U supplies many of the employees for companies that keep expanding their operations in Utah including Goldman Sachs, Adobe, Oracle, the National Security Agency, IM Flash, eBay and many others.

Location

Salt Lake City, Utah, sits in a mountain bowl 4,300 feet up, with immediate access to all forms of adventure: four world-class ski resorts 45 minutes from Salt Lake International Airport (with 10 more outside city limits); a lineup of slanty canyons to the east with a hundred options for hiking, biking, climbing and camping; a Great Salty Lake to the west for boating and floating; and there’s golf, too, for you golfers.

And there are plenty of indoor things to do in Salt Lake City, too: concert venues for crowds of 20 to 20,000; restaurants repping all corners of the globe and a bourgeoning foodie scene at small-market prices; blockbuster theaters and art house indies; ballet, opera, orchestra and theatre worthy of much less convenient metropolises; museums; malls; and pro basketball, soccer, baseball and hockey.

The Salt Lake and Utah Valleys have a wide range of public transportation options for patients and their families both local or from further away. Utah Transit Authority (UTA) Buses and Trax (Train) and University of Utah Campus Shuttle are the major services available.
