Overview

Top-level research, excellence in teaching and studies, internationality and interdisciplinary collaboration have stood for the University of Konstanz since its foundation as a Reform University in 1966. This clear orientation soon led to a unique profile that is defined not only through high quality but also through innovation, creativity and a distinct zest for research.


The range of teaching offered to more than 11,300 students includes study opportunities Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Arts and Humanities as well as Law, Economics and Politics. Many of the 100 and more study opportunities have an interdisciplinary structure. Furthermore, the university has a range of international offerings, such as the Master's degree programmes in "Public Administration and European Governance" and "Quantitative Economics". Outstanding Rankings regularly confirm the exceptional quality of the studies offered.


International students have plenty of options at the University of Konstanz: they can study Bachelor's or Master's degree programmes full time, PhD programmes or take part in an exchange programme. The variety of studies offered covers a wide and diverse range. International students can choose from thirty different subjects in the natural sciences, in the arts and humanities, in law and economics and administrative sciences. A growing number of courses are taught in English. While Bachelor degree programmes are usually taught in German, most programmes include courses taught in English in their course catalogue.


In 1965 the founding committee of the university developed the concept of a reform university with new forms of study and teaching, a central administration and central facilities for technology, computers and language training. New forms of self-administration replaced traditional university structures. In 1966 the university began its work in a wing of today's Inselhotel, formerly a Dominican monastery. Professor David Daube, Regius Professor of Civil Law at the University of Oxford, gave the inaugural lectures.


Among the best 20 young universities worldwide, second-best German university: In the QS-Ranking "Top 50 Under 50" the University of Konstanz moves further up, placing 2nd nationally, and 21th internationally. In the comparable THE-Ranking Konstanz is rated as the best German university. In the national comparison the University of Konstanz has achieved an outstanding 2nd place in the current "QS Top 50 Under 50" ranking. Europe-wide it rose from place 11 to place 8.
