University of Alberta is a Top 5 Canadian university and one of the Top 100 in the world, home to more than 170 graduate programs, 200 undergraduate programs and 450 active student groups.
The one-hundred-year history of the University of Alberta has been a century of vision, a vision borne out of the partnership of two ambitious men: Alexander Cameron Rutherford, the first Premier of Alberta, and Henry Marshall Tory, a McGill University professor who became the University of Alberta’s first president. Critics at the time dismissed their dream as impossible, or at best impractical, but the vision would become a reality. The passing of the University Act in 1906 by the new government of Alberta paved the way to the official opening of the University in 1908.
The University of Alberta consistently ranks among the top five universities in Canada and among the top public research universities worldwide. In 2014 QS World University Rankings ranked the university 84th overall in the world and fifth in Canada. The Webometrics Ranking of World Universities rated the university 77th in the world in July 2013.
The Faculty of Education is located on the University of Alberta’s main campus (North Campus), which has faced downtown Edmonton from across the banks of the North Saskatchewan River for a century.
The U of A is minutes from the North Saskatchewan River valley, North America’s largest stretch of urban parkland. Historic Whyte Avenue, with its boutiques and coffee shops, is a short walk from campus, and downtown’s Jasper Avenue, home to high-quality restaurants and nightlife, is a few LRT stops away. Just a few more stations down the line, the Arts District boasts the Winspear Centre of Music and the Citadel Theatre.
The University of Alberta also has a French-language campus, a downtown location, a rural liberal-arts campus, and a South campus.
