Stony Brook University, State University of New York

Student life

The main campus is a large site on Long Island’s North Shore, which spans over 1,000 acres and houses the main academic areas, an 8,300-seat stadium and sports complex, and a university hospital, Stony Brook Medicine. In addition to this, there are two satellite campuses – one in midtown Manhattan and the other in the town of Southampton.

The main campus is located in the historic north shore hamlet of Stony Brook near the geographic midpoint of Long Island, approximately 80 km east of Manhattan and 108 km west of Montauk.

Bounded to the north by New York State Route 25A (North Country Road) the campus is subdivided into "West Campus" and "East Campus" by the thoroughfare County Road 97 (Nicolls Road). The Ashley Schiff Forest Preserve separates the South Campus from West Campus. The Long Island Rail Road serves the community with the Stony Brook Station situated along the northern edge of the campus.

In 2013, Stony Brook University launched its own bike share system to provide a sustainable transportation alternative for students - Wolf Ride Bike Share. In 2016, the university provides 8 stations and 63 bikes.

Academic activity pauses each Wednesday from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. for campus lifetime, when students can check out free concerts, sample free food and take a break from the rigor of classes. Annually, students gather for events like the Roth Pond Regatta, a race of student-made cardboard boats, and the Shirley Strum Kenny Student Arts Festival, a week of student work showcases. Students can also check out more than 300 student organizations on campus, including more than 30 fraternities and sororities.

For a workout off the field, students can bike and hike around Stony Brook’s large wooded campus, which includes the Ashley Schiff Park Preserve. For an urban experience, New York City is about 60 miles away.

Stony Brook has wide variety of student-run organizations on campus including sororities and fraternities and a count of almost 300 recognized student clubs and organizations. The Undergraduate Student Government at Stony Brook University is trusted with the responsibility of budgeting the undergraduate student activity fee, which funds most student run organizations on campus. Graduate students also pay a graduate student activity fee, which is budgeted by the Graduate Student Organization.

Accommodation
