Founded in 1845 as Queen’s College Belfast, one of three Queen’s Colleges in Ireland.
Became an independent university in 1908. Major centenary celebrations are planned for 2008.
Joined Russell Group in 2006; first university to be invited to join since the group’s foundation in 1994.
