Overview
The Ecole Polytechnique, colloquially called “X” or simply “Polytechnique” is the leading French higher education institution in the field of Science and Technology. Founded during the French Revolution as a military school under Napoleon, the School is still linked to the French Ministry of Defense. Every year its students parade down the Champs Elysées on the Bastille Day, in 19th-century-style uniform. Two Nobel laureates and two French Presidents as well as a number of influential personalities in government, industry, finance and research are graduates of the School. Among Polytechnique-related high-technology projects are the French high speed trains (TGV), Airbus planes, rocket launchers (Ariane), and the mobile phone system GSM.
