Established in 1902, Beijing Normal University is a non-profit public higher education institution located in the urban setting of the metropolis of Beijing. Officially recognized by the Ministry of Education of The People's Republic of China, Beijing Normal University () is a large coeducational higher education institution.
BNU offers courses and programs leading to officially recognized higher education degrees such as bachelor degrees, master degrees, and PhD degrees in several areas of study. This 115 years old institution has a selective admission policy based on entrance examinations. International applicants are eligible to apply for enrollment. BNU also provides several academic and non-academic facilities and services to students including a library, housing, sport facilities and/or activities, financial aids and/or scholarships, as well as administrative services.
Beijing Normal University (BNU) has a history of more than 100 years, which is almost as long as the history of Chinese modern education. The University has developed from the Faculty of Education, Capital Metropolitan University established in 1902 under the concept of Establish school, prioritize teacher education, which initiated teacher training in Chinese higher education. After several times of merging and reforming since 1949, especially in the 1980s, Beijing Normal University has moved into the new age of rapid development.
Beijing Normal University has always been committed to international exchange and cooperation. At present, the university has established cooperative ties with over 200 universities, international organizations and enterprises from more than 30 countries and regions.

BNU ranks among the top universities in China. Signing an agreement with Ministry of Education and Beijing Municipal Government, BNU became the 10th university on the list to get special support from the Chinese Government, aiming to be a world prestigious university. Now, it has 108 doctoral degree programs, 153 master degree programs, 60 bachelor degree programs and 25 post-doctoral programs. Beijing Normal University had 16 national key disciplines, including 5 general disciplines and 11 specialized disciplines. Education, Psychology, Chinese History, Geography and Ecology – ranked first in China. The BNU 17 disciplines rank top10 in China.
QS World University Ranking 2015 placed the university 252nd worldwide and 7th in China.
