As a key cultural and intellectual center in western Europe, Amsterdam provides an ideal environment for academic study. Amsterdam attracts students from all over the Netherlands and beyond.
The administration of the school, most of the faculties, and the majority of student housing are located in the historic City Centre, within the canal ring which is itself a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The facilities in this area date from as early as the 15th century to the 21st-century. Architectural styles represented include the Dutch Renaissance, Dutch Baroque, Art Deco, Amsterdam School, and International style.
Demand for housing is high, although not-for-profit rental companies own much of Amsterdam's housing stock. The university offers student housing through non-profit Housing Corporations not owned by UvA.
The Housing Corporations offer apartment-style housing in the City Center, Zuid, Oost, West, Zuid-Oost, and Amsterdam-Noord bouroghs of Amsterdam as well as in the suburb of Diemen. Single rooms with private facilities (kitchen, bathroom), single rooms with shared facilities, shared rooms with shared facilities, and couples rooms are available. Students of the opposite sex are permitted to be roommates in all types of rooms. Rooms are anywhere from a few minutes to 45 minutes bike ride to the City Center.
More than 1,700 university rooms are available for allocation to international students.
The career advisers at the UvA Student Careers Centre can help a student with any question. It also organizes such events like labour market information (in the Netherlands and abroad), helps students to develop their application skills, in seeking a career path, helps in looking for internships.
Amsterdam is ideally located in Europe and is a vibrant creative, cultural and business hub. It was ranked 11th out of 200 cities in Mercer’s 2015 global ‘Quality of Living Survey’.
The primary mode of transport for students is by bicycle. The city of Amsterdam also has various public transportation options available to students. These include the Metro, trams, nightbusses, and ferries.
