Year 1
The first year is mostly theoretical and includes study of basic subjects (about 37-40 EC). Students can choose their main subject, which can be bass guitar, composing & arranging, double bass, drums, jazz guitar, piano, saxophone, trombone, trumpet and vocals. The student is familiar with the basic concepts of music theory, geared towards Jazz. Besides, major studies also include about 2-5 EC of professional development subjects and 15-21 EC of music theory in the 1st year.
The number of main subject and components related to the main subject studies is slightly less than in the first year (33-36 EC). Professional development studies take more time (4-9 EC) and include basic teaching skills, music- and information technology. Music theory studies hours also increase (18-23 EC) and includes aural skills jazz, theoretical analysis, history of the subject. There are no minors durind the 1st and 2nd years study period.
These years take less major studies and here students can choose their minors, which should take about 7-8 EC. They can include some theoretical study and compulsory elements: work placement (starts in the 3rd year), methodology - concentration on the instrument and final assignment (start in the 4th year).
Zuyd is based in Heerlen, Sittard, and Maastricht. The university has eleven locations in these cities. Its strategic location in Europe (on the border with Belgium and Germany) offers unique opportunities for students and businesses. Big cities like Aachen, Cologne, Brussels and Antwerp can all be reached within an hour. This facilitates getting an international internship at one of the numerous international businesses or doing an exchange program at one of its partner universities in the region.
