This award prepares students for a wide range of careers in the arable crop production industry and ancillary organisations; the course is designed to give students an opportunity to specialise in crop production whilst undertaking study that enables a greater appreciation of the requirements for their specialist area; students must add the following course codes to their UCAS application: Conservation management: CON; Global crop production: GLO; Wildlife conservation: WIL.Global crop productionThis strand provides a good knowledge and critical understanding of the well-established principles of commercial horticulture, including an understanding of some advanced aspects of protected cropping techniques, international trade, supply chain management and post harvest technologies.Conservation managementStudents develop and become equipped with an understanding enabling effective management of a broad range of landscapes and ecosystems; there is a focus on habitat management, protection and restoration, and students will be able to appreciate issues in respect of the design and implementation of habitat management practices; strategies to address the threat of climate change on biodiversity are considered along with dynamic approaches to ecological management. Wildlife conservationThis strand provides comprehensive training in modern wildlife management techniques and is designed to introduce key concepts of biodiversity, sustainability and environmental conservation; students develop a broad understanding of the scientific principles required for effective management of wildlife and comparisons are made between species and habitat conservation and the role of zoos and ecotourism are also discussed.
