University of York, PhD, Computer Science

 United Kingdom

Entry requirements

  • The PhD in Computer Science is intended for students who already have a good first degree in Computer Science or a related field. Typically, you will have achieved a good Master's degree or at least an upper second class honours degree (or international equivalent).
  • The University is willing to consider your application if you do not fit this profile, but you must satisfy us that your knowledge in Computer Science is appropriate for advanced study.
  • If English is not your first language, or your first degree was not taught in English, then you will need to have attained a suitable language qualification no more than two years before the start of the course.
  • The University requires to have a minimum IELTS score of 6.5 or equivalent for postgraduate taught courses and 6.0 or equivalent for research degrees.
Applications for research programmes can normally be submitted throughout the year. However, competition can be strong so you should apply as early as possible. In general, you should aim to apply early enough to allow enough time for you to provide evidence that all conditions of your offer are satisfied and so you can apply for accommodation and visas if travelling from overseas.

Before making a formal application you should identify and contact a potential supervisor. Applications for research programmes are made via the Online Applications Service (SELECT). You can complete your application in stages as our system allows you to save your progress and come back later to finish it.

For all applications, please remember to include:

  • The name(s) of the supervisor(s) whose research groups you are interested in joining;
  • The project or area of research you are interested in;
  • Your research proposal;
  • Transcripts of your undergraduate and any Masters degrees.  Please ensure that you meet the minimum entry requirements;
  • A Curriculum Vitae (CV);
  • An accepted English language certificate (if English is not your first language);
  • Details of how you intend to finance your studies.  If you have been awarded or intend to apply for scholarships, please give the names of the scholarships;
  • The names and email addresses of two referees who have agreed to provide you with references. At least one of these should be an academic reference. We advise that you get in touch with your referees before you submit your application, and let them know that they should expect a reference request.

Location

York is regularly voted one of the best places to live and visit in the UK. The city was named the best place to live in Britain by The Sunday Times 2018. Our excellent cafés, restaurants and bars, innovative industries and mixture of modern and medieval architecture propelled it to the top of the list. With a population of 200,000, it’s big enough to feel lively but small enough to feel like home.

York is situated only 2 hours away from London and 1 and a half hours away from Manchester by train. The city benefits of some of the best train connections in the country, linking York to every corner of the UK.
