York Law School is an inspirational place for study and research. It has a vibrant community committed to excellence and is a top rated school for teaching and learning.

The programme is designed to develop a deeper understanding of how international corporate and commercial law operates in the real world; it will enable successful students to pursue careers in business or return to professional practice with an enhanced understanding of various important area of law and practice; it also provides a firm platform for further research and study by way of an MPhil or PhD.

Studying law in a different country can be daunting, especially so when done at a masters level. English law is premised on the “common law” system, widely used in English speaking countries around the world. It is however very different from the Roman/civil law system used in Russia and other parts of the world. York Law School offers considerable support for students to settle into the common law system, by designing a thorough induction programme to acclimatise all students to the common law system.

Studying for the LLM at York is a dynamic process and a good mix of students greatly enhances this. We really value the contribution students from across the globe can make to our community and the different perspectives they can bring.

The LLM in International Corporate and Commercial Law aims to provide:

  • a critical understanding of the process of corporate globalization
  • an in depth and contextual coverage of the main topics in corporate governance and commercial law

At the end of the course students should:

  • have an understanding of the economic and social context in which commercial decisions take place
  • an understanding of the nature of the company and company law and how this and corporate governance operates
  • a conceptual framework in which to understand these developments

Your experience will be a real asset in the problem-based learning approach that we use. As a member of a student law firm, your perspective will play an important role in helping this approach to more closely replicate team-working in a globalised and multicultural context.

Who is this course for?

The degree will particularly appeal to those with an interest in cross-border transactions and international business. Students will have the opportunity to study in a truly international group.

Location

York is regularly voted one of the best places to live and visit in the UK. The city was named the best place to live in Britain by The Sunday Times 2018. Our excellent cafés, restaurants and bars, innovative industries and mixture of modern and medieval architecture propelled it to the top of the list. With a population of 200,000, it’s big enough to feel lively but small enough to feel like home.

York is situated only 2 hours away from London and 1 and a half hours away from Manchester by train. The city benefits of some of the best train connections in the country, linking York to every corner of the UK.
