Though based and taught primarily in UWIC elements of the course have been designed in partnership with Copenhagen University (Body, Learning and Identity Research Group) and Liverpool John Moores University (J.H.Makin Drama Centre); visits to these institutions feature as a part of the programme; in the taught element of the programme (year 1) students engage with the underlying philosophies that underpin qualitative inquiry and undertake a critical exploration of areas such as action research, ethnography and grounded theory; in addition, the programme considers the aspirations associated with the narrative turn, critically evaluate the potential of alternative writing styles (i.e. creative non-fiction and fiction) and examine other forms of communication such as auto-ethnography, life-history, ethno-drama, dance, poetry and visual methods (i.e. photography); the final research project (year 2) allows students to follow their own disciplinary interests and submit this work in a dissertation or in more creatively-based form.
