One characteristic that distinguishes our department is our strong commitment to our students. This commitment takes two forms. First, we demand excellence in teaching by all of our faculty. The university has recognized the teaching excellence of the department by conferring on our faculty such awards as The University of Toledo's Outstanding Teaching Award and Master Teacher Award. Second, our department provides research opportunities to undergraduate students which are unheard of at most universities. Our faculty have a long and distinguished record of working with students on research projects, real research -- not just term papers. It is fairly common to have our students apply for and receive funding for their research projects. (Imagine getting paid to research a topic.) Our department currently has available several Shapiro Scholarships for summer research grants. Further, we have had many of our students present their research results at conferences and have seen the research activity of our students play a critical role in their acceptance into leading graduate programs or in landing prestigious jobs in industry.
