Physicists try to understand the laws of nature, the structure of matter and the behavior of the physical processes. They try to find the keys to the universe's secrets. Physics is the basis for the other sciences and modern technology. It is responsible for solar power, microelectronics, lasers, optical communications and nuclear energy.
UTphysics majors choose between a bachelor of science and a bachelor of arts degree. They can concentrate in physics, astrophysics, applied physics, biomedical physics or an individualized concentration designed with a departmental adviser’s help. This might include biophysics, computational physics, geophysics, physics and philosophy.
Students use modern research facilities such as the Ritter 1-meter telescope, the accelerator labs, the thin-film growth labs, the A&S Instrumentation Center, and many spectrometers, lasers and computers. They help conduct research in photovoltaics, fast ion beams, plasma devices, stellar and galactic astrophysics, relativistic atomic structure and the physics of the DNA molecule.
