Three concentrations are offered to English majors at UT. The general literature option features a wide range of courses in English, American, and Global literature and literary criticism. Students interested in writing and/or editing careers may choose from the general writing or creative writing concentrations. Students may also earn Honors or a minor in English. UT’s English department also offers master’s programs in Literature and English as a Second Language (ESL).
All English majors work closely with advisers to design individual areas of specialization and may choose an internship program where they may receive credit for work in businesses or organizations off campus. The department of English is unique in that it offers a working relationship with the Toledo Museum of Art and the Center for the Visual Arts, providing an extensive archive of print materials and artists’ books, allowing for courses in visual language, letterpress printing and the art and process of the book. Students may work with Aureole Press, a literary fine-press that publishes established and up-and-coming writers. English majors also edit and publish the Toledo Review of poetry and prose.
