The course is non-modular, but provides experience in all aspects of orthodontic diagnosis and treatment planning, as well as practical experience in the use of contemporary orthodontic appliances, including preadjusted edgewise appliances, tip edge, functional appliances, extra-oral traction and other auxiliaries; the scientific basis of orthodontics is explored with courses in research methodology and statistics and participants are expected to prepare a research dissertation on a topic developed within the department; although the degree is not sufficient to be recognised as a specialist in the UK, there are occasional opportunities to extend the course for a further year to allow adequate time to prepare for the membership in orthodontics at 1 of the UK Royal Colleges.
