Students who choose to combine these 2 subjects supplement their language studies with the study of the art and architecture of the Islamic world; in addition to the study of Persian language and literature, further subjects may include early Islamic art and archaeology (600-1250), later Islamic Art and architecture (1250-1700), Iranian history, and the development of Shi'ism; the course aims to give students a thorough grounding in written and spoken Persian; to provide students with a broad knowledge of the history and intellectual culture of Islamic societies; to familiarise students with the general course of the evolution of the art and archaeology of Islamic societies from the hijra to the 17th century; to help students to develop the skills of description, analysis, and interpretation of the material culture of Islamic societies.
