The Philip Merrill College of Journalism offers four Master’s Degree Programs:
Multiplatform Journalism – for students interested in reporting on public affairs or sports across multiple platforms, or for students planning careers as editors and producers for multi-platform news organizations. These students plan to write, shoot photos and video or produce multimedia graphics for news organizations of all kinds.
Broadcast News – for students preparing for careers as TV or radio news and sports correspondents, anchors or producers. These students plan to work at the nation’s local and national broadcast outlets in any number of challenging jobs.
Returning Journalist – for newsroom veterans who enroll in a highly individualized course of study. Students in this specialization are given five years to complete the degree and must complete a thesis. These students come back to school to learn new journalism skills, or update existing ones. They also get a chance to study in other schools and colleges across the University of Maryland, the largest comprehensive university inside the Capital Beltway.
Multimedia Graduate Certificate Program – This two-semester, 12-credit graduate certificate program (two classes each semester) is designed for working professionals. Classes meet on Saturdays, so there’s no conflict with work schedules. Classes may also be taken individually over a two-year period. Completion of all four courses provides media professionals with a thorough and modern understanding of digital communication and entrepreneurship, including the fundamentals of Web publishing, social networking and online community building.
