The course aims to provide instruction in a range of skills needed in the analysis of archaeological data primarily at a landscape scale, and the opportunity to use them in analysis and interpretation; it introduces the theoretical issues underpinning landscape studies and introduces a range of techniques that can be used in the study of landscapes and buildings within them; this interdisciplinary programme offers a fresh and detailed approach to understanding the forms, evolutions and interpretations of the varied landscapes that exist beyond yet interact with urban spaces; examining sources and approaches to past landscapes of all periods, the course engages students fully with current methods and thinking, and also field techniques and approaches.
