Philosophy of mind is the systematic attempt to understand the fact that we are not merely things in the world, but creatures for whom there is a world; unlike sticks and stones, we experience ourselves and our surroundings; most contemporary philosophy of mind in the so-called analytic tradition is characterized by a curious neglect of the body; in this tradition, body frequently functions as a synonym for brain; there are, however, other traditions of philosophizing about the mental, in which the body is ascribed a central role; this course brings the mainstream of analytic philosophy of mind into a much-needed dialogue with these other traditions.
