The programme locates African development firmly in theory and practice; it contextualises and analyses the processes that have shaped poverty and underdevelopment in Africa, and the many responses to them; the programme offers a grounded and multi-disciplinary grasp of issues of development in an African context for students interested in pursuing a career in development agencies, research, the public sector and non-governmental organisations; core components of the degree tackle the theories and politics of international development, the history of poverty and development in Africa, and strategies designed to address developmental problems on the continent; a range of optional courses are available to enable students to gain in-depth knowledge on particular issues related to development, such as gender, science and technology, environment, aid, and research methodologies.
