University of East Anglia (UEA), BSc (Hons), Geology with Geography

Year 1

The first year enables you to build a strong foundation of knowledge through compulsory modules in Understanding the Dynamic Planet, physical and chemical processes in the Earth system, and Research and Field Skills. They will introduce you to a range of subjects you are unlikely to have come across until now, ensuring that you will be able to choose optional modules effectively in the following years.

Year 2

As the course progresses, you will be given greater freedom to tailor your course according to your own interests, selecting subjects from a wide range of specialist modules, such as Geomorphology; Global Tectonics, or Sedimentology, alongside one compulsory module in Earth Science skills.

Year 3

  • The focus of your third year of study is a substantial independent research project, allowing you to investigate a specialist area of your own interest in depth. You will also have the opportunity to select subjects to study from a range of optional modules - including Geophysical Hazards, Paleoclimatology and an overseas Geosciences field course.
  • You will spend your third year on an industrial work placement lasting from 9 to 14 months, gaining relevant experience and developing your skills and knowledge. We have established links throughout the UK and beyond, and we will help you identify and compete for appropriate positions.
  • After maintaining a good standard of academic performance during your first two years, you will spend your third year studying at one of our university exchange partners in Australasia, New Zealand, North America or Europe. We take into account your field of interest and placement preferences, and do our best to place you at the university of your choice. See the “Study Abroad” section below for more details.
