This four year degree programme combines the study of French, Spanish or Japanese at an advanced level with the study of translation issues and media with the third year spent in a country where your honours language is spoken. You usually have a choice of optional modules in each year of your study. The Course Profile tab lists all the compulsory and optional modules available each year.
Year 1
Besides compulsory language modules which include work on French, Spanish and Japanese culture and society and the module ‘Introduction to Language and Communication Studies’, you will choose from a range of optional culture and media modules.
Year 2
In your second year compulsory language study makes up at least one third of your course. You will study the compulsory translation module ‘Translation Issues Across the Media’ and choose from a wide range of options in culture, translation, media or subsidiary languages. Your choice of options is made in consultation with your adviser, who will ensure that it not only reflects your interests, but that it is also academically coherent.
Year 3 (Year Abroad)
This year is spent in a country where your chosen language is spoken. We have well established links with universities in France, Spain, Mexico and Japan. You can also take up a teaching assistantship or work placement. This will extend your experience of the language and the culture. For further information please see the Year Abroad tab.
Year 4
In your final year, compulsory language study will again make up at least one third of your course. You will study a compulsory translation and also choose from a wide range of options in culture, translation, media or subsidiary languages. Again, you will make these choices in consultation with your adviser.
