The combination of subjects that make up this course is an interesting and overlapping pairing in that film and much media constitute major forms of visual culture; the programme enables the student of film and media to relate this area of study to developments in other areas of popular and high visual culture over the course of the 20th-Century and beyond; the art history and visual culture programme explores the ways in which people’s lives have become shaped through contact with, and consumption of, images and designed objects; it aims to develop a critical understanding of different aspects of contemporary visual culture as well as an awareness of its recent historical developments; the subject centres on the disciplines of art history, design history and aesthetics, at the same time challenging the notion of such distinct approaches to the study of visual culture; film and media is a multi-disciplinary subject area focusing on the study of mass media forms, such as: cinema; television; photography; popular music; advertising; the press; the programme of study is designed to help students understand the central role of media in shaping modern culture and our outlook on the world; learning is mainly through illustrated lectures and seminars, but the courses also involve screenings, educational visits etc where appropriate.
