The programme draws upon institute of biomedical science (IBMS) specialist portfolios for the design of credit-rated modules in the professional disciplines of medical microbiology, histopathology, clinical chemistry or haematology and transfusion science; these are combined with modules in biomedical laboratory management and applied molecular biology and a laboratory-based research project to form a coherent and specialist discipline-centred part-time route for pathology service employees holding appropriate entry qualifications; during the programme students expand their knowledge and skills in diagnostic laboratory medicine, learn to apply these to clinical diagnosis, laboratory management and research, and develop as reflective practitioners; students following the full MSc programme take 2 year-long work-related modules in the pathology discipline subject of haematology and transfusion science; lectures, seminar and workshop are based at the university, and students can use work-based practice and experiences to support the learning programme.
