The TESL Program emphasizes the importance of helping teachers understand both instructional and research principles to assist them in adapting to the changing face of ESL. We provide professional development to both pre-service and experienced teachers. We facilitate professional development by introducing our students to current research and theoretical models, by helping them understand how to ask questions about the interactions they observe in their classrooms, and by exploring the possible ways in which those questions might be addressed.

Location

The Faculty of Education is located on the University of Alberta’s main campus (North Campus), which has faced downtown Edmonton from across the banks of the North Saskatchewan River for a century.

The U of A is minutes from the North Saskatchewan River valley, North America’s largest stretch of urban parkland. Historic Whyte Avenue, with its boutiques and coffee shops, is a short walk from campus, and downtown’s Jasper Avenue, home to high-quality restaurants and nightlife, is a few LRT stops away. Just a few more stations down the line, the Arts District boasts the Winspear Centre of Music and the Citadel Theatre.

The University of Alberta also has a French-language campus, a downtown location, a rural liberal-arts campus, and a South campus.
