Citizenship education is a statutory subject in the secondary curriculum; the subject addresses key contemporary issues including global interdependence, social responsibility and respect and human rights; the role of citizenship education is to provide secondary school students with an understanding of their roles and responsibilities as citizens in a modern democracy; the course is designed to enable students to meet the National Standards for the award of Qualified Teacher Status (QTS); there are 10 modules, 6 of which are spent in schools in a programme that gives students an advanced understanding of secondary schools and skills in classroom management and lesson delivery; students gain experience of teaching in at least 2 secondary schools and acquire high level skills in the application of new technologies in teaching and learning; a key feature of the course is the special focus weeks where students, as a citizenship cohort, spend time in an EBD, primary and EAL school.
