This course has been developed with Newman’s partner institutions in France, Germany and Spain in response to the national initiative to incorporate modern foreign languages in the primary school; successful completion of this course leads to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) subject to satisfactory performance in skills tests; the course prepares students to be a fully qualified, effective generalist Primary teacher in Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2, with additional competencies in teaching French, German or Spanish at Primary level; students follow the same modular programme as all students on the Key Stage 1/Key Stage 2 route of the PGCE Primary course, but also complete a module specifically dedicated to the teaching of modern foreign languages; designed with the specific aim of preparing students to teach within the 5-11 age range, the general primary course involves the study of Newman-based modules in the teaching of the National Curriculum core subjects of English; mathematics; science and information communication technology; in addition skills in teaching French, German or Spanish language and culture in primary schools are developed during the course.
